Overview

Senate Resolution No. 70 created the Task Force on Reading Curriculum and Instruction to conduct a study to gain data on the teaching of reading and the Reading Sufficiency Act (RSA).

Based upon its findings, the task force recommended that the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, in conjunction with higher education institutions, offer an annual reading conference for school teachers, administrators and higher education faculty that is focused on substantive reading professional development and curriculum alignment, effecting emergent and conventional reading.Past conference literacy topics have included literacy development, technology, culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, tools and practices.

2023 Conference Speaker Information

Jennifer Serravallo

Jennifer Serravallo is a literacy consultant, speaker and the author of several popular professional books, including the New York Times bestselling The Reading Strategies BookThe Writing Strategies Book, Teaching Writing in Small Groups and several others. Her resources help teachers make goal-directed, responsive strategy instruction, conferring, and small group work doable in every classroom.

Serravallo began her career in education as a New York City public school teacher. As a consultant, she has spent the last 15-plus years helping teachers across the country to create literacy classrooms where students are joyfully engaged, and the instruction is meaningfully individualized to students’ goals.

Dr. Stephen Krashen

Dr. Stephen Krashen completed his doctorate in linguistics at UCLA (1972) and is currently an emeritus professor of education at the University of Southern California. He is the author of more than 525 articles and books in the fields of bilingual education, neurolinguistics, second language acquisition and literacy.

Krashen has received numerous awards, including the Mildenberger Award (1982) for his book, Second Language Acquisition and Second Language Learning (Prentice-Hall); the Pimsleur Award, from the American Council of Foreign Language Teachers for the best published article in 1985; the Dorothy C. McKenzie Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Field of Children’s Literature (Children’s Literature Council of Southern California); a doctorate of humane letters awarded by Lewis and Clark College, Portland (2011); and the Kenneth S. Goodman In Defense of Good Teaching Award, from the College of Education, University of Arizona (2019).

Mariana Llanos

Mariana Llanos is a Peruvian-born writer of children’s literature. She is the 2022 Oklahoma Book Award Winner with her book Run Little Chaski (Barefoot Books 2021). Her titles include the upcoming Benita and the Night Creatures (Barefoot Books, 2023) and Luca’s Bridge/El puente de Luca (2021 ALSC Notable Book Awards), among others.

In 2017, Llanos received the Oklahoma Human Rights Award for her work visiting schools around the world via virtual technology to promote literacy. That same year, she was selected as the Best Latino Artist by the Hispanic Arts Council of Oklahoma. Her latest work is titled Qoritika and the Three Alpacas, an audio-only story featured on the Tiny Tales by Pampers podcast produced by Sony Music Entertainment. She has two upcoming chapter book series: Vampirita, set to release in 2023, and Martina, set to release in 2024. She resides in Oklahoma City.

Barbara Lowell

Barbara Lowell is the author of the picture books Behind the Bookcase: Miep GiesAnne Frank, and the Hiding Place, which received the 2022 Creative Women in Oklahoma Award for Children; My Mastodon, a 2021 Oklahoma Book Award Winner; Sparky & Spike: Charles Schulz and the Wildest, Smartest Dog Ever, a Junior Library Guild Gold Star Selection Award winner; and more books for children. She lives in Broken Arrow with her husband, Jim, and a terrific cat named Lily.

Tammi Saur

Tammi Sauer, a former teacher and library media specialist, is a full-time children’s book author who presents at schools and conferences across the country.

Sauer has 36 published picture books. Her books have received awards, earned starred reviews, made lists, been developed into musicals, and been translated into many different languages. Most importantly, kids really like her books!
