Recognizing that adult students bring a variety of experiences with them when enrolling in college, the Oklahoma Adult Degree Completion Program will work with students to assess any college-level learning they may have acquired. Through prior learning assessment (PLA), students will actively examine their own experiences in work, training and life experience that may qualify as college-level learning for college credit. The program will also evaluate students' educational goals to determine what learning they already have and what knowledge they need to gain in order to meet those goals.
The methods used for PLA will depend on the type of credit a student needs to earn. Common methods of assessment include credit by standardized or departmental examination, training and certification evaluation, interviews, demonstrations and portfolio review.
PLA is conducted by a certified faculty member from an Oklahoma college or university. Up to 30 hours may be awarded if you qualify. It is important to keep in mind that PLA does not guarantee course credit but provides a valuable tool for assessing learning.
If you think your experiences qualify for PLA, contact your home institution coordinator for more information.
