Through the EDGE initiative, Gov. Brad Henry, the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education worked toward the development of a focused economic action plan to provide Oklahoma a new competitive edge in the global economy.

Oklahoma’s EDGE (Economic Development Generating Excellence) was guided by a steering committee and 23 teams of experts from the public and private sector. Regional, public forums were held across Oklahoma Nov. 4, 2003. Gov. Henry, Secretary of Commerce Kathy Taylor and Oklahoma Higher Education Chancellor Paul G. Risser kicked off the public discussion via live video link.

The forum also introduced Oklahoma’s new international teaching and learning resources. Developed with Oklahoma Associations Supporting International Studies (OASIS), this teaching tool provides resources to teachers and students in kindergarten through college so they are prepared to compete in the global economy.

The final EDGE recommendations were presented to the governor in January 2004. Some of the recommendations havel become part of Gov. Henry’s legislative proposals, while others have been sent on to appropriate agencies or organizations for implementation.
