Civic Responsibility Contest
In conjunction with Constitution Day, Sept. 17, 2009, Oklahoma Campus Compact sponsored a Civic Responsibility Contest based on the theme explored in University of Oklahoma President David Boren's book, A Letter to America. Students were asked to submit an essay, video or other type of media entry to address one or more of the following themes on the the value of civic responsibility for American society: what civic responsibility means to me; my duty as a citizen; how knowledge of U.S. history and government can be advanced; or why bipartisanship is important to democracy.
Brett Middleton, a University of Central Oklahoma senior majoring in interpersonal communications, won Best Overall Entry with an essay on "What Civic Responsibility Means to Me."
Calli McNickle, a University of Central Oklahoma senior majoring in modern language education and Spanish, won Best Essay Entry with an essay on "The Importance of Bipartisanship."
Brooke Switzer, a University of Central Oklahoma junior majoring in family and consumer science education, won Best Visual Entry with an electronic poster on "What Civic Responsibility Means to Me."

Oklahoma Campus Compact Receives Grant to Promote the MLK Day of Service
Oklahoma Campus Compact recently received $2,500 from North Carolina Campus Compact to promote the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service 2010 on Jan. 18. (more)
2008 Voter Registration Contest Winners
Officials with Oklahoma Campus Compact 
announced in early October that Langston University, Rose State College and the University of Oklahoma wonthe 2008 Voter Registration Contest.
Langston University registered 32 percent
of its enrollment; Rose State College registered 8.4 percent; and the University
of Oklahoma registered 9.1 percent.
All together, 16 college campuses across
the state registered 5,331 new student
voters, beating the old record of 3,910
registrations set in 2004. The competition
grouped institutions with similar-sized
full-time enrollments.
“Congratulations to these three institutions and to all of the participants in this record-setting effort,” said Chancellor Glen D. Johnson. “Campus Compact is avaluable asset for the public and private institutions
in our state, providing programs that
encourage students to learn civic
responsibility.”
This marked the sixth consecutive year
that
Oklahoma Campus Compact sponsored the Voter Registration Contest. Even though the contest has
concluded, as part of the 2008 Campus Vote Initiative, officials are encouraging campuses to
continue ongoing efforts by providing opportunities for voter education and encouraging and providing assistance for students to vote.
Established in 2000, part of Oklahoma Campus Compact’s mission is to increase student civic engagement on Oklahoma college campuses.
Fall 2008 Carter Academic Service Entrepreneurship (CASE) Award
The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education have announced the students selected for Carter Academic Service Entrepreneur (CASE) grant awards through the Oklahoma Campus Compact program. The awards recognize the best volunteer work of college students, faculty and staff as they partner with community groups. (more)
