Oklahoma’s college graduation rates of full-time students continue to improve. Six-year graduation rates of entering freshmen at the research universities increased from 54.7 percent in 2000 to 60.2 percent in 2003. Regional universities increased from 35.7 percent to 38.3 percent, and three-year graduation rates at the community colleges increased from 28.5 percent to 32.8 percent during the same period. Graduation rates vary by type of institution due to selectivity and mission; therefore, community colleges have the lowest graduation rates primarily due to open admissions policies.

The number of degrees awarded at state colleges and universities has increased since the inception of the Brain Gain initiative in 1999. The initiative includes performance funding where the State Regents allocate a portion of state appropriations according to the institution’s performance in student retention and number of degrees produced.

In 2004, the State Regents developed Brain Gain improvement grants to assist state colleges and universities with initiatives that would further increase student retention and degrees earned at their institutions.

First Year Retention Rates - Research Universities. In the 1996 baseline Oklahoma was 79.4% and the national was 78.8%. Current status for cohort 2001 was Oklahoma at 82.1% and the National was 84.7%.

First Year Retention Rates for Regional Universities. In 1996 the baseline for Oklahoma was 66.3% and the national was 74.6%. Current Status for cohort 2001 was Oklahoma at 68.1% and the National at 75.0%.

First Year Retention Rates Community Colleges. In 1996 baseline of Oklahoma was 59.2% and the National was 52.6%.
For current status of cohort 2001Oklahoma was 61.0%, National was 52.8%.

Oklahoma Degrees Conferred:
In 1996 the baseline for Associates was 7,479, Bachelor's was 13,148 and Graduates was 5,321. Current Status for 2002-2003 was 5,992 for Associates, 12,191 for Bachelor's and Graduates was 3,841.

Graduation Rates for Research Universities. In the 1996 baseline Oklahoma was 44.8% and the national was 53.2%. Current status for cohort 2003 was Oklahoma at 55.8% and the National was 64.0%.

Graduation Rates for Regional Universities. In 1996 baseline for Oklahoma was 27.8% and the National was 40.3%. Current status 2003 was Oklahoma at 31.8% and the National at 43.1%.

Graduation Rates for Community Colleges. In 1996 the baseline for Oklahoma was 14.4% and the National was 36.1%. For current status of cohort 2003 Oklahoma was 19.4% and National was 30.1%.
