Community college professor receives international recognition for online course
The Exemplary courses will be showcased during the fifth Annual WebCT User Conference, July 14 through 18 in San Diego, Calif. Oklahoma City Community College was the only two-year institution to be selected. Philipp's course was the College's first course to be offered over the Internet in January 1997. In April 2003, the American Council on International Intercultural Education (ACIIE) awarded the course an honorable mention as "Best Practice: A current, successful international or intercultural project or activity" for the incorporation of global awareness in the core curriculum of the course. "The faculty development grants were an important part in allowing me to develop and refine the course," said Philipp. "Actually there is a great number of individuals, including students, who have directly or indirectly helped make the course what it is." The course allows students to develop the skills needed to create a Web site for personal or professional use. Design considerations include navigation techniques, audience needs, browser/platform concerns, and connection speeds. A combination of XHTML and Web page authoring software is utilized for topics such as: building, formatting, enhancing, and publishing pages; maintaining a Web site; manipulating graphics; and incorporating Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript. Each student creates, publishes, and manages a Web site dealing with a topic of global/international interest. Philipp began teaching distance education courses more than 15 years ago. Her first distance education was Introduction to Computers in Telecourse format. Story contact: Jessica Martinez-Brooks, 405.682.7590 |
