Record Set for Campus Voter Registrations in Annual Contest
Officials with Oklahoma Campus Compact announced this week that Langston University, Rose State College and the University of Oklahoma won the 2008 Voter Registration Contest.
Langston University registered 32 percent of its enrollment; Rose State College registered 8.4 percent; and the University of Oklahoma registered 9.1 percent.
All together, 16 college campuses across the state registered 5,331 new student voters, beating the old record of 3,910 registrations set in 2004. The competition grouped institutions with similar-sized full-time enrollments.
“Congratulations to these three institutions and to all of the participants in this record-setting effort,” said Chancellor Glen D. Johnson. “Campus Compact is a valuable asset for the public and private institutions in our state, providing programs that encourage students to learn civic responsibility.”
This marked the sixth consecutive year that Oklahoma Campus Compact sponsored the Voter Registration Contest. Even though the contest has concluded, as part of the 2008 Campus Vote Initiative, officials are encouraging campuses to continue ongoing efforts by providing opportunities for voter education and encouraging and providing assistance for students to vote.
Established in 2000, part of Oklahoma Campus Compact’s mission is to increase student civic engagement on Oklahoma college campuses.
