Southeastern Professor Jon Reid Spends Summer Teaching in Hong Kong and China

College professors spend their summers in a variety of ways. Some may teach. Others may do research. And some may travel.

For Dr. Jon Reid, it was all of the above and more as the Southeastern Oklahoma State University psychology and counseling professor spent time in Hong Kong, mainland China, and Taiwan.

In Hong Kong, Reid participated in several workshops during and following the International Conference on Grief and Bereavement in Contemporary Society.

He also presented and taught on three college campuses, including the Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology, Wuyi University, and National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences.

A highlight of the trip was his participation in the Death Café, the first event of its kind in Hong Kong. Reid appeared in conversation with participants in a news video aired on Hong Kong television. The Death Café event provides a forum for people to talk about death, which is a taboo subject in China.

"This trip has been a great professional growth experience for me," Reid said. “I've been able to attend a professional conference, make presentations to several professional audiences, gather research data, and increase my knowledge of Chinese culture and of Chinese people. The students I taught in
conversational English were eager to improve their English-language speaking ability and eager to learn about American culture. I very much appreciate the support of my department chair Dr. Ed Mauzey and Dean Lucretia Scoufus in allowing me a flexible teaching schedule this summer."

Reid is past president of the Association for Death Education and Counseling and a fellow in Thanatology (the study of death).

He joined the Southeastern faculty in 1993.
