Southwestern Oklahoma State University students in the President’s Leadership Class program at Weatherford recently had a unique opportunity in Washington, D.C.

Four PLC students — Blaine Boyd and Taylor Boyd, both of Weatherford; Samantha Carson of Elk City; and Cord Gothard of Velma — laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

The four participated in the ceremony on the day after Memorial Day. They were accompanied by a Tomb Guard Sentinel. After the wreath was placed, the delegation then stood in salute as a bugler played “Taps.”

“It was very emotional to pay tribute to all the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces,” Blaine Boyd said. “We are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice.”

The Tomb of the Unknowns is a monument dedicated to American service members who perished without being identified. The soldiers buried are from World War I, World War II and the Korean War. The tomb guards, or Sentinels, are members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment and guard the tomb around the clock.

The PLC students, along with SWOSU President Randy Beutler, were in Washington, D.C., along with other members of Class V. The PLC students make the trip after completing two years in the PLC program. The students visited many sites during their five days in Washington, D.C.
