UCO to Purchase Oklahoma Hardware Building in Bricktown for ACM@UCO Expansion

AMC@UCO Expansion
The University of Central Oklahoma will purchase the 65,000-square-foot Oklahoma Hardware Building, located at the corner of Oklahoma Ave. and Flaming Lips Alley in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district, allowing for further expansion of its Academy of Contemporary Music at UCO (ACM@UCO).

The University of Central Oklahoma will purchase the Oklahoma Hardware Building, located at the corner of Oklahoma Ave. and Flaming Lips Alley in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district, to allow its Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM@UCO) to further expand, accommodating increasing demand for the innovative music education program.

The purchase was approved by the state Council of Bond Oversight and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. The purchase price is $6.5 million for the 65,000-square-foot building.

“The ACM@UCO has quickly established itself as one of the top music education programs in the nation. We’ve got students from all over the country who want to come here,” said Steve Kreidler, Central’s executive vice president.

“Given both the potential for growth and the economic impact the academy and its students can have on the state, it just made sense for us to work toward the purchase of the building. This allows us to best serve our students’ needs.”

The university leased space on the fourth floor of the building when the ACM@UCO opened in 2009 and added 4,400 square feet of space on the second floor last year when enrollment more than doubled.

With the purchase, the academy will add the rest of the second floor, as well as the third floor, to its space. The university will lease the first floor space. The sale is expected to close Aug. 1.

Having both graduated its first class of 90 students and launching the ACM@UCO Business Development Center in May, academy CEO Scott Booker sees the purchase as the next logical phase for the academy.

“This is a natural progression of both the size of the school and our partnership with Bricktown. The ACM@UCO is combining the finest of a ‘commercial’ arts education with the atmosphere of a downtown entertainment district. There is no better home in Oklahoma City for the ACM@UCO.”

Based on the successful model from the original ACM in Guilford, England, the ACM@UCO is an innovative music program unlike any other in the U.S., offering an industry-based, “real world” educational experience for those interested in a career in contemporary music.

The ACM@UCO offers two-year associate degree programs in bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, music business, music production and vocals.

Classes are taught by music industry veterans and supplemented with master classes featuring invited guests. Past master class guests include The Who’s Roger Daltrey, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Jackson Browne and Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd, among others.
