State Budget Cuts Impact Funding for Colleges, Universities

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education has approved the fiscal year 2012 budget for the State System of Higher Education. The appropriation for operations is a $58.2 million, or 5.8 percent, decrease from last year’s appropriation.

The budget includes a one-time FY11 supplemental appropriation of $10 million to offset the decrease in state appropriations. The total appropriation to the state system, including the supplemental appropriation and $63.2 million dedicated funds for the Oklahoma Promise scholarship program, is $1.008 billion for FY12.

“We appreciate the efforts of Gov. Fallin and the Legislature in working to minimize the budget reduction to higher education in an extremely difficult budget year,” said Chancellor Glen D. Johnson. “We will work with our colleges and universities to address this budget reduction in a way that minimizes the negative impact on our academic programs and our students. As we have experienced four consecutive semesters of record enrollment increases, with over 16,000 new students on our campuses since 2008, we will continue our efforts to provide a quality academic product to our students at a very affordable cost.”

For state colleges and universities, the next step in the budget process is to formulate their operating budgets for FY12. These proposed operating budgets and recommended tuition rates will be presented to the State Regents at their regularly scheduled June 22 meeting and voted on at the June 23 meeting.
