UCO’S Student Counseling Center Re-Accredited by International Board

The University of Central Oklahoma’s Student Counseling Center (SCC) has received provisional re-accreditation by the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc. (IACS).

Central’s SCC was evaluated by IACS against high standards of counseling practice, and was found to offer competent and reliable professional services to its clientele – UCO’s students, faculty and staff.

“IACS accreditation is a seal of approval, reinforcing the quality of services we provide. Our service has been certified as one which meets the highest established standards in the field,” said Dr. Bruce Lochner, assistant vice president of Student Affairs and director of Central’s SCC.

Central’s SCC is one of two higher education counseling service in the state to get this approval, joining 200 college and university counseling centers worldwide that have been accredited through IACS.

Approval by IACS also is dependent upon evidence of continuing professional development, as well as demonstration of excellence of counseling performance.

“While we are currently progressing towards full accreditation, our current provisional accreditation from IACS will allow the SCC to be in a better position to recruit excellent practicum and job candidates to work at the center and most importantly providing more and better services to our students,” said Lochner.

IACS was established in 1972 to encourage and aid counseling agencies to meet high professional standards through peer evaluation, and to inform the public about counseling services that are competent and reliable.

The SCC began the accreditation process three years ago. The process involves a self-study, application and team visits by IACS.

The SCC currently offers individual, couples and group counseling, serving more than 15,000 students at Central.
