OSU-Tulsa Announces Textbook Rental Program for Fall Semester

Oklahoma State University-Tulsa began offering textbook rental services for a limited number of courses at the OSU-Tulsa Bookstore this fall. The Rent-A-Text program will provide students a savings of 50 percent or more off the price of new textbooks.

“We are eager to launch this new rental program to provide our students with an affordable alternative to rising education costs,” said Howard Barnett, president of OSU-Tulsa and the OSU Center for Health Sciences. “We are committed to providing students with affordable textbook choices without sacrificing quality.”

Chris Bradshaw, manager of the OSU-Tulsa Bookstore, said the textbook rental program became available to students July 25. He said textbooks are available for a variety of classes, most at less than half the cost of the new textbook purchase price.

“The savings for the students will be the best part of the new rental program,” Bradshaw said. “The availability of online rental will also make it that much more convenient.”

Bradshaw said students can place rental orders in the store or online with in-store pick up. Rentals are for one semester, but students have the option to purchase the book if they decide they want to keep it.

The Rent-A-Text program will be offered through OSU-Tulsa’s partnership with Follett Higher Education Group. Bradshaw said about 30 percent of the store’s titles will be available for rent for the fall semester. He said the number of textbooks in the rental program might increase in the future based on mass-market demand and the release of new editions.

The program is based on Follett’s comprehensive pilot program that saved students nearly $2 million on their course materials in just one semester at seven schools. More than 90 percent of students surveyed who rented textbooks expressed satisfaction with the pilot program.
