| EVENT: Native American Symposium at SEOSU Southeastern Oklahoma State University's sixth Native American Symposium is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Nov. 10-11, on the Durant campus. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Native American Women in the Arts, Education and Leadership.” General registration and a continental breakfast are slated for 8 a.m. Nov. 10 at SEOSU's Sidewalk Café. The 9 a.m. welcoming address will be presented by Dr. Dan Althoff, associate professor of Spanish, English, humanities and languages, who also serves as co-chair of the Native American Symposium Committee. Thursday’s sessions will be held in the SEOSU Ballroom, the Magnolia Room and the University center from 9:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., when Winona LaDuke will speak in the Little Theater. Duke is an internationally recognized Native-American activist and advocate for environmental, women's and children's rights. Friday begins with conference registration and continental breakfast at 7:45 a.m. in the Sidewalk Café. The Keynote Banquet is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in the Student Union Ballroom. The meal will cost $15 per person. Check or money orders should be made out to the Southeastern Foundation and mailed to Dr. Mark B. The second day features keynote speaker Buffy Sainte-Marie, who will offer remarks at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom following the banquet. Sainte-Marie began her multi-faceted career as a popular singer and songwriter in the early 1960s. She has toured colleges, reservations and concert halls across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. She went on to become a social activist, composer of experimental music, television actress, visual artist and educator, receiving numerous international honors and awards for her achievements. Banquet deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 1, and late registrations cannot be accepted. The entire two-day program is free except for the banquet.
