EVENT: Summer 2003 Storytime Program
Children are making friends with artists from Georgia O'Keeffe to Andy Warhol during the Summer 2003 Storytime Program at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus. Each week, Storytime guests explore a different artist through children's literature and related hands-on art activities. Susan Baley, education curator, presents Storytime each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in Room 225 of the OU School of Art, adjacent to the museum building. "Through stories and picture books we can introduce children to artists in a way that is very accessible to them," said Baley. "Many of the books show the artist as a child, or show the artist through the eyes of a child, which makes it compelling for this age group." At the end of each story, children get to create their own masterpieces, from works on paper to clay sculpture. On July 22, Painting the Wind will give children a glimpse into the world of Vincent Van Gogh through the narrative of Claudine, the child of his housekeeper. Other titles in the summer series include Uncle Andy's by James Warhola and Picasso and the Girl With a Ponytail and Leonardo and the Flying Boy, both by Laurence Anholt. For a complete listing of dates and books, visit the museum's Web page, www@ou.edu/fjjma. Storytime is geared to children ages 3 to 5, accompanied by an adult. Although museum galleries are closed for renovation and construction, museum offices are open during regular business hours. Parking for Storytime is available in the visitor's lot next the Baptist Student Union on Boyd Street, across from the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. For more information, call Baley at 325-3270. |
