EVENT: NSU Musical Series Whether your music tastebuds crave the sounds of cool country or rocky rock ‘n’ roll, Northeastern’s spectacular summer musical series is your choice for high quality, family entertainment in northeast Oklahoma. NSU’s Repertory Company, an award-winning professional musical troupe, began its summer lineup on June 19 and runs through August 9. Downtown Country presentations for the 2003 summer include “Spurs and Stripes” and “Forever Country!” “Spurs and Stripes.” Stand up and salute as the Downtown Country cast brings you a tribute to the music of America—country music! With your favorites from the trailblazers of yesterday and today’s red-hot artists, this show is a Star-Spangled country extravaganza; a high-energy production with a rousing patriotic finale you won’t want to miss. “Forever Country!” Join the cast of Downtown Country in a musical journey spanning nearly a century. Spotlighting names such as Bob Wills, Hank Williams, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, George Strait, and Martina McBride just to name a few, you’ll want to see the show that pays tribute to the songs, stars, and events that defined each decade. Relive the legacy that paved the way for country music to continue on today and forever. The River City Players presents “Rock, Roll and Remember” and “Let Freedom Ring” for 2003. “Rock, Roll and Remember” will take you back to the innocent, feel-good days of the Sock Hop and poodle skirts as professional entertainers sing and dance to the music that marked the beginning of Rock and Roll. “Let Freedom Ring.” Sit back and relax as the River City Players take you through a musical retrospective of the songs that made our country great. All the way back to George M. Cohen’s Yankee Doodle Dandy, down through the years to the masterful works of contemporary artists such as Billy Joel. “Let Freedom Ring” will touch your hearts and lift your spirits as talented performers relive America’s musical history through dance and song. Performances run through August 9; Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. All Downtown Country performances will be held at the NSU Playhouse on the corner of Downing & Muskogee Ave. River City Players performances will be held at the NSU Shawnee Street Theatre on the corner of College and Shawnee Street.
