EVENT: "Faces from Afar" exhibit at Redlands
Community College
An exhibit of contemporary color photographs of indigenous people from around the world will be on display through July 9 in the Redlands Community College Art Gallery. “Faces from Afar” is a collection of portraits and close-up images by photographer and lecturer, Dr. Frank S. Wert. Through portraits and close-up images from far reaches of the globe, this collection celebrates the extraordinary diversity of the ordinary people that together share this limited planet. Whether from a warrior tribesman of New Guinea, a blowgun hunter in the Amazon, or a Sahara Desert dweller in the Sahel of West Africa, “Faces from Afar” documents the expressions of our common humanity and our shared destiny. Dr. Wert is a photographer, lecturer and world traveler, specializing in third-world images and topics. His initial interest in photography, as a tool for understanding traditional and rapidly changes societies, has evolved into a striking visual connection between the photographer and his subject. This connection reflects Dr. Wert’s deep personal respect for those whose lives are being radically altered by the steady encroachment of industrial capitalism. His photographic and lecture interest are developed through his extensive travels. He has journeyed to Borneo, Northwest India, the Himalayas, Ecuador, New Guinea and West Africa. His photographs have been exhibited as solo shows at the Donna Nigh Gallery at the University of Central Oklahoma, the Kirkpatrick Gallery at the Omniplex in Oklahoma City, and the Oklahoma Arts Council’s Oklahoma State Capitol Gallery. They have also been included in a number of group exhibits. In addition, his photographic images support his lectures and presentation on third-world travel and related cultural topics. Dr. Wert is Professor Emeritus of Economics and former Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Central Oklahoma. He served as a visiting professor to China and a Fulbright Scholar to Jordan. He is a self-taught photographer. The exhibition may be viewed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, May 19 through July 9 in the Redlands Gallery. Admission is free.
