EVENT: SWOSU SMART-6 Dr. Brian D. Campbell, professor in the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Department of Chemistry & Physics, recently received a $10,500 grant from Darlington Public School District in conjunction with the Oklahoma State Department of Education for SMART-6, a teachers training program that is scheduled June 15-July 10 on the Weatherford campus. The grant will assist faculty involved in the Science and Mathematics Association of Rural Teachers (SMART-6) program. SMART-6 is a year-long program intended to increase content knowledge, update teaching methods, and the creation of standards-based mathematics and science lessons for K-12 teachers in western Oklahoma. SMART-6 includes a four-week Summer Institute running from June 15 through July 10 and six Saturday sessions (three in the fall, three in the spring) designed to give teachers direct, hands-on experience and training in mathematics, science and technology. Participating teachers receive stipends, teaching supplies to be used for school in-services, and about 200 contact hours of teacher development. Twenty-one school districts and educational organizations from Oklahoma are partnering with Dr. Campbell, Darlington and SWOSU. Dr. Campbell's SMART programs are the only Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) programs in the state of Oklahoma to be funded each year offered. For additional information regarding participation in the program, contact Campbell at brian.campbell@swosu.edu or at (580)774-3118. |
