EVENT: OU College of Engineering Summer Camps for Aspiring Engineers Only 9 percent of today’s practicing engineers are women and fewer than 10 percent are members of under-represented minority groups. To meet the challenges of global competition and provide prosperity and security for this and future generations, we must mobilize our many talented young people. The College of Engineering at the University of Oklahoma is leading in outreach, recruitment and retention efforts to produce a strong engineering workforce for our State and Nation. The College of Engineering will host its annual summer programs for high school students who are ready to get a head start towards their future as engineers. Two innovative programs will be offered by the college and sponsored by BP. The camps are for students who are interested in engineering, mathematics, science and/or technology. The BP camps will take place on the OU campus from June 21 through 27. These week long programs are for young adults graduating between 2010 and 2012 who are curious about how things work and want to create new technology and solve complex problems. BP DEVAS (Discovering Engineering Via Adventure in Science) camp caters to young women. It engages them in activities where they can gain hands-on engineering experience through team projects, learn about the various engineering disciplines and explore the OU campus. The participants will interact with those who share their same interests, providing them the opportunity to get a glimpse into the real world of engineering. A field trip to a local engineering facility is also planned, plus much more. The BP Engineering Academy provides young men the opportunity to learn what engineers do through engineering team projects led by OU’s top engineering faculty working in both laboratories and at field sites. The cost to participate in the DEVA or Engineering Academy camp is $250, which includes housing, meals, seminars, tours, entertainment and engineering project supplies. Both camps strongly encourage African-American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaskan Native and/or First Generation college students to apply; however, the program considers all applications regardless of background. Applications can be found at www.coe.ou.edu. The deadline is May 25, 2009. For more information, contact Liz Cook at (405) 325-0095 or elizabeth.cook@ou.edu. |
