EVENT: Tulsa Chautauqua at OSU-Tulsa William Lloyd Garrison, portrayed by Michael Hughes, Ph. D, adjunct professor of art, East Central University, Ada, appeared at a recent Tulsa Chautauqua 2003 preview at Tulsa Community College (TCC). Garrison, abolitionist and 19th Century newspaper publisher, is among five historical figures who will be portrayed at Tulsa Chautauqua 2003, June 2-7, at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa (OSU-Tulsa). The theme of the chautauqua, presented by the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa, is "Lies and Compromise: America in the 1850s." OSU-Tulsa and TCC are co-sponsors of Tulsa Chautauqua 2003. The modern chautauqua movement began during the American bicentennial, as a "tent revival" for humanities and as an entertaining means of provoking discussion of American history.
