EVENT: NSU Symposium on the American Indian
The theme of this year’s symposium, “Legacy 1909-2009” commemorates Northeastern State University's history as a leading educational institution nationwide among American Indians. NSU graduates more American Indian students than any other four-year public university and offers the nation’s first and only American Indian language program (Cherokee education degree). Many presenters who have unique ties to the University will be featured during the symposium, including NSU alumni Dr. Rennard Strickland, Wes Studi and Dr. Linda Sue Warner, as well as Dr. Akira Yamamoto and Dr. Marianne Mithun. The week's festivities include a pre-symposium film series featuring the work of American Indian filmmakers, actors and producers, as well as the Annual NSU Alumni Powwow and Traditional Clothing Style Show Luncheon, hosted by the NSU American Indian Alumni Association. The only one of its kind nationwide, the Annual Symposium on the American Indian began in 1973 to recognize the institution's historic roots and provide a forum for discussion of Native American issues.
