EVENT: Oklahoma Guitarist Returns for Concert Performance
Brad Richter will present an evening of classical, international and original guitar music on Tuesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. at Oklahoma City Community College, 7777 S. May Ave. The performance is a part of the 2002-03 Cultural Awareness Series. Richter, born in Enid, began teaching himself to play guitar at the age of 12. At 18, having had no formal musical training, he was awarded the Presidential Scholarship to the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago where he began performing, composing and teaching professionally. He completed his undergraduate degrees in performance and composition in 1993 and decided, after receiving offers from Yale and several other American universities, to accept a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. While studying in London with guitarist Carlos Bonell and composer Timothy Salter, Richter won two important and highly coveted competitions. In 1993 he became the first guitarist to win the Thomas Morherr Prize for his duet performances with Sinead Pratschke, and in 1994 he won the Royal College of Music guitar competition. Later in 1994, he completed his Master's degree at the Royal College of Music and returned to the United States to continue his concert career. Richter has performed as a soloist in towns and cities throughout North America and Europe as well as with ensembles such as the Pacifica String Quartet, the Catalina Chamber Orchestra and the Evanston Symphony Orchestra. He has been featured as a performer/teacher at guitar and music festivals around the world. Recent festival appearances include the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas and the Ninth Annual Guitar Festival of Great Britain. A versatile player, Richter can be heard on several compact discs, playing jazz, bluegrass and folk, as well as classical music. In 1999 he won the National Finger-Picking Guitar Championship, a competition that routinely features some of the world's finest guitarists from all disciplines. The Cultural Awareness Series at Oklahoma City Community College received the 2002 International Intercultural Achievement Award for innovative programming and grant awards from the Oklahoma Arts Council, the Heartland Arts Fund, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The performance will be held in the College Theater. Tickets are $8 general admission and $6 for students and seniors. Visitors should park in parking lot D and enter through entry 6 or parking lot C and use entry 5.
