EVENT: OCCC to Host NCAA Diving Championships Oklahoma City Community College will host the NCAA Zone E Division I Men's and Women's Diving Championships March 13 through 15 in the Aquatic Center. This is the first year for the college to host this event. The NCAA will be evaluating the site location for future use. "This is one of the largest diving competitions we have ever had at Oklahoma City Community College," said Stephanie Scott, aquatics, health and safety training specialist. "We look forward to having the College as the permanent site for this competition." Over 60 athletes will be diving on the platforms and the one- and three-meter springboards. Fifteen universities from the western United States will be on campus. PAC 10 schools include: Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, UCLA, Stanford, Southern California and the University of California. Those from the Mountain West Conference are Brigham Young University, University of Wyoming, Colorado State University, the Air Force Academy, and University of New Mexico. Other schools competing are Northern Arizona, Pepperdine, University of California at Irvine and the University of San Diego. "There are not too many indoor facilities in the western United States that can host this type of event," said Scott. When the NCAA began looking for venues for the diving competition the Mountain West Conference recommended the Aquatic Center. The College has hosted the Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships for four years. "This is a great opportunity for the public to watch some of the best championship diving in the country," said Scott. Competition begins at noon on Thursday, March 13. The platform diving will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15. The event, hosted by the Air Force Academy, is free and open to the public. Sponsors for the competition include Charleston's, Outback and Coca-Cola. For more information, call Scott at 682-1611 Ext. 7662. |
