| EVENT: OU Writing Workshop Students in kindergarten through 12th grade, teachers and parents, too, are invited to participate in a writing workshop Wednesday, March 31, sponsored by the Oklahoma Writing Project, a program of the University of Oklahoma College of Education. The Seventh Annual Oklahoma Spring Celebration Writing Workshop for Students and Teachers will be held at the Moore Norman Technology Center, 4701 12th Ave. N.W. Each teacher is invited to bring five students. Fees for the workshop are $25 for teachers and $15 for students and parents. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by a quick writing session and orientation at 9. Students and teachers may choose two workshops in the morning. After lunch, a general session will be held for all participants, followed by the awards presentation. Winners of the 2004 Oklahoma Writing Project Writing Contest for Students and Teachers will be announced during a special session from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Winning writers will participate in a read-around of their pieces. All who attend the session will receive a copy of the 2004 OWP Anthology of Winning Writing. Teachers may download and print the registration form on the OWP Web site at ou.edu/special/owp. Teachers also may contact Janis Cramer, co-director of Inservice for the Oklahoma Writing Project, at cramerj@sbcglobal.net or (405) 495-4903, and to have a copy mailed or faxed to them. Space is limited, so people are asked to register by March 10. Teachers sent 220 entries into this year’s writing contest. Poetry judge is Pat Sturm, OWP teacher consultant and editor of OWP News and a columnist for Oklahoma Gardening Magazine. Prose judge is Martha Rhynes, OWP teacher consultant and author of The Secret of Rat Pack's Nest as well as biographies of Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks and Ralph Ellison. First-place winners will receive an autographed copy of Rhynes’ novel. “If you've never brought students to one of these workshops, you should do it this spring,” Cramer said. “Evaluations are always spectacular. It’s a fun and rewarding day for all participants.” CONTACT: Janis Cramer, 1-405-325-1498 |
