EVENT: Gaylord College to Examine Visual Storytelling,
Historic Perspectives in Broadcast Journalism at 2003 McMahon Symposium NBC News correspondent Bob Dotson will discuss his lifetime of covering social issues in the broadcast medium as a participant in the University of Oklahoma Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication's 2003 McMahon Symposium, "Through the Looking Glass Darkly: The Changing American Perspective," scheduled Monday, Feb. 24, on the OU Norman campus. The symposium, to be held in Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave., will include five panels on a variety of issues, including the evolution of the American presidency, changes in American news coverage of terrorism, the charitable instinct in America and minorities in American society. The symposium also will feature a luncheon address by John Larson, a reporter for NBC's Dateline news features show, and an evening reception featuring video and commentary from Dotson. "The McMahon Symposium highlights important issues affecting our students, the community and the fields of journalism and mass communication," said Charles C. Self, dean of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. "Broadcast news has changed the way Americans view their world and given a 'face' to the triumph and tragedy we have experienced during the past half-century. Exploring broadcast news through the singular perspective of Bob Dotson will help our students understand the profession they will be entering." The symposium will feature video clips from The Dotson Collection, an extensive archive of Dotson's 30-year career as an NBC correspondent. The archive includes more than 1,000 videotapes and films, more than 7,500 news and documentary transcripts, and numerous historic photographs. There is no cost to attend the conference, but registration is required. Interested parties may register online at http://jmc.ou.edu/McMahon/ or via telephone at (405) 325-5055. Created through a gift from the McMahon Foundation, the
McMahon Symposium addresses topical issues and trends affecting journalism
in the United States and abroad. Past McMahon Symposiums have included
in-depth examinations of terrorism and the media, the role of journalism
in the U.S. justice system, journalism and the Oklahoma City bombing,
sports journalism and civic journalism. |
