EVENT: OSU Arts and Sciences College
Arts and
Humanities Lecture Series The College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma State University recently kicked off its 2008 Arts and Humanities Lectures Series. The popular lectures feature a wide range of speakers. Three lecturers visited the campus during January. On Feb. 19, Christine Ruane, an expert on Russian social history, came to OSU to discuss how fashion affected Russian society in the era of the czars. Ruane is a history professor and director of graduate studies at the University of Tulsa. Her most recent research focuses on Russia’s introduction of Western dress and its effects on Russia. The lecture also discussed her upcoming book, “The Emperor’s New Clothes: A History of the Russian Fashion Industry, 1700-1917.” “Dr. Ruane’s lecture appealed to those who are interested in fashion and what it tells us about a society’s ideals and values,” said Elizabeth Williams, professor and head of the university’s department of history. “The lecture also offered a chance to look at some fabulous clothes.” On March 12, Kevin Gaines, professor and director of the Center for Afro-American and African Studies at the University of Michigan, will discuss “Americans in Africa: Black Expatriates in the Age of Civil Rights.” The venue is to be determined. The lecture is sponsored by the OSU History Department. To learn more visit www.cas.okstate.edu. |
