| EVENT: UCO Jazz Lab Anniversary with Wynton Marsalis
The University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab will celebrate its third anniversary with a concert featuring Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musician Wynton Marsalis on March 23. Marsalis will perform two separate shows on that date, one at 7 p.m. and another at 9:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale Feb. 2, but reservations now are being accepted. Each show will have only 200 seats available, and members of The Friends of the Jazz Lab, a community support group, can take advantage of limited priority seating. Marsalis, one of the most recognized names in jazz music, will perform with an ensemble of musicians. The performance will include selections from his latest Blue Note Records release “The Magic Hour,” his first jazz ensemble studio recording in five years. He also recently composed the score for the PBS documentary “Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson.” His honors include nine Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize and posts as a United Nations Messenger of Peace and as the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. The UCO Jazz Lab opened in March 2002, and has since enjoyed recognition and success as one of the top live music venues in the Oklahoma City Metro area. The facility hosts top local, national and regional talent with live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Recent headlining performers include Jane Monheit, Diane Schuur, Steve Tyrell, Maynard Ferguson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Christopher Cross and more. In addition to live performances and events, the Lab also provides an innovative educational experience for the UCO School of Music’s jazz students, and houses a professional, state-of-the-art recording studio, which is utilized by students, performers and the community. The Lab also enjoys a partnership with The Hideaway pizza restaurant, which operates a booth inside the Lab to provide a full service bar and food. The Jazz Lab is located at 100 E. Fifth Street in Edmond. To reserve tickets to the Marsalis concert, call (405) 359-7989. Access www.ucojazzlab.com for a complete list of performances and events. The College of Arts, Media & Design at UCO, established in January 2001, serves the local community by promoting cultural awareness through the arts. It further seeks to be a leader in developing arts education programs and preparing art educators. The college is comprised of the Department of Art, Department of Design, School of Music, and Department of Theatre, Dance, and Media Arts as well as the Oklahoma Center of Arts Education.
