Oklahoma higher education responds to students affected by Hurricane Katrina ![]() Oklahoma’s public colleges and universities are stepping up to help students displaced as a result of Hurricane Katrina. To help displaced students continue or start their college education with as minimal interruption as possible, some institutions have made the admission and enrollment process easier by extending fall enrollment deadlines, waiving late fees and even allowing current students to withdraw with full refunds. University of Oklahoma designated as 'StormReady' The University of Oklahoma is the first university in the state and one of only 10 nationwide to achieve the StormReady designation awarded by the National Weather Service. To achieve the designation, the University met NWS guidelines related to information reception equipment, local weather and water monitoring equipment, local warning dissemination readiness and community preparedness criteria. Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union whose policies of perestroika and glasnost eventually led to the end of the Cold War, will visit East Central University, Ada, Oct. 25. Gorbachev, the leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from 1985 to 1991, is admired for introducing the policies of perestroika (governmental restructuring) and glasnost (political openness) in an effort to streamline and decentralize the oppressive - and failing - system he inherited. Read more. OSU-OKC receives national retention excellence award OSU-Oklahoma City has been named as one of three recipients of the 2005 Lee Noel and Randi Levitz Retention Excellence Awards. The awards are presented by Noel-Levitz, the leading higher education consulting firm in North America, and recognize innovative campus retention programs that have encouraged students to succeed and persevere through graduation.
