Officials with Oklahoma Campus Compact announced this week that Oklahoma Christian University has won the annual Voter Registration Contest this year. The Oklahoma City-based campus registered 198 of its students during the five-day contest Sept. 17-21. The total represents 11 percent of OC’s entire student body.

“Congratulations to Oklahoma Christian University for their great efforts in getting college students registered to vote and to all of the campuses that participated in this worthwhile effort,” said Chancellor Glen D. Johnson. “A college education should include learning civic responsibility, and that’s why Campus Compact is such a valuable program on our campuses.”

Oklahoma Campus Compact will present OC with the 2007 Voter Registration Champion banner during a major campus event this semester.

All together, 14 college campuses across the state registered 1,198 new student voters during the event. Eastern Oklahoma State College, Wilburton, finished in second place by registering 118 students, while Connors State College, Warner, placed third by registering 71 students.

The winning campus is selected based on the percentage of students registered in comparison to total campus enrollment.

This marked the fifth consecutive year that Oklahoma Campus Compact sponsored the Voter Registration Contest. Even though the contest has concluded, officials are encouraging campuses to continue ongoing efforts by providing opportunities for voter education and by designating a location where students can register to vote.

Established in 2000, part of Oklahoma Campus Compact’s mission is to increase student civic engagement on Oklahoma college campuses.
