High school seniors across the state have the unique opportunity to submit college admission applications with support from knowledgeable volunteers during Oklahoma College Application Week, Nov. 16-20.

Oklahoma’s College App Week is part of National College Application Month, during which college access organizations across America host college application events in all 50 states.

U.S. President Barack Obama recently issued a proclamation declaring November as National College Application Month. A portion of the presidential proclamation declares: “At such a critical time in people’s lives, we owe it to them to make sure they have the necessary resources and information to confidently make the important decisions that come with applying to college. This month, let us strive to expand access to quality higher education for all people and to make real our Nation’s promise of opportunity. Together we can once again secure our status as the country with the highest proportion of college graduates in the world, and we can forge a future where dreams know no bounds.”

The primary goal of College App Week is to get more senior students, especially those who haven’t considered attending college and those from first generation college families, to apply and establish relationships with colleges and universities that will hopefully lead to enrollment.

“We are excited to see the growth in Oklahoma College App Week in its fourth year,” said Chancellor Glen D. Johnson. “Oklahoma College App Week was piloted in 2012 with 24 school districts and has expanded to more than 80 districts participating this year. This program is a valuable resource for high school seniors as they apply to college, providing immediate, personal guidance as they walk through the application process. Seniors also learn about the next steps in the enrollment process and how to apply for financial aid.”

During College App Week, schools select a convenient time for seniors to sit down in front of a computer and apply to the college(s) of their choice. Volunteers from the community, local businesses, colleges and universities, and other supportive organizations are on site to assist students with any questions during the process.

Prior to College App Week, high school seniors and their families receive materials that help them research college options and prepare for application questions. In support of local events, schools often promote college as the next step after high school through all grade levels and encourage students to think about higher education through special events and activities like “wear your favorite college t-shirt day.”

Along with the State Regents, College App Week is supported by Oklahoma GEAR UP, the Oklahoma College Access Network (OK-CAN), the Oklahoma College Assistance Program, the Oklahoma State Chamber, the Oklahoma State Department of Education and nationally by the Lumina Foundation, Kresge Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the American Council on Education.  For more information about College App Week, visit okcollegeappweek.org or call 800.858.1840.
