(GIT) A group from Oklahoma State University made a presentation to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Natural Resources and Regulatory Services Tuesday, promoting the idea of a "New Product Development Center" for Oklahoma.
The presenters said they hope to create the center to help bring small manufacturers to rural Oklahoma, to create jobs that would preserve the way of life so many rural Oklahomans hold dear. The center would do research and development for the manufacturers, helping them create new and innovative products to help them compete in a global market.
Bill Barfield, professor of Biosystems and Engineering at OSU, made a plea on behalf of the group.
"We're talking about a partnership for selection, development and commercialization of new products for small manufacturers in rural areas. This is about jobs for rural Oklahoma," he said. "Agriculture and minerals can no longer sustain the economies of Oklahoma's rural communities. Not by itself. You've got to have manufacturers out there."
Barfield said that many Oklahoma farmers have asked for help in this area, because it would allow their wives and children to work and earn extra income without leaving the area.
He said he had worked with manufacturers with a great deal of success in the past, but this idea would work even better because the manufacturers would have input in product development from beginning to end.
"We have shown that we can work with manufacturers," he said. "We know what they think. We know how they think."
Senator Paul Muegge, D-Tonkawa, showed his support for the idea. "This is really to me the cutting edge of the new mentality that we have to have," Muegge said.
