From:  Lesa Borin & Carolyn McCoy

Friday, March 15, 2002

Highlights this Week:

Senator Dickerson Honored in Two Memorial Ceremonies

Senator Larry Dickerson was laid to rest on Tuesday, March 12, following two separate memorial services.  The first was held in the Senate Chamber on Monday, March 11, at 2:00 p.m.  “We wanted it to be a celebration of his life,” Senate President Pro Tempore Stratton Taylor, D-Claremore, said of the service in the Senate Chamber. Former Governors David Boren and David Walters, Congressman Wes Watkins, and many other former legislators were in attendance.

The second service took place at the Mick Thompson Fieldhouse at Carl Albert State College in Poteau.

The service was filled with stories and laughter and ended with friends, family and legislators singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame.  At the close of the service, Dickerson’s son John pushed his father’s voting button as the Senate took a symbolic final roll call.

HB 2536 Passes Senate

The Senate voted 47-0 in favor of HB 2536 on Wednesday afternoon.  The bill would establish a new fund for the Department of Central Services to be designated as the "Higher Education Facilities Revolving Fund".  The monies for the fund would come from the current one-cent assessment per each gallon of motor fuel and diesel that is sold in the state.

Within the fund there will be two accounts established: one account for the University of Oklahoma weather center and the other for advanced sensor technology at Oklahoma State University.  The total amount designated for the fund is $38,000,000, which will be divided equally between OU and OSU.

The bill will up for debate on the House floor Monday, March 18.
