OKLAHOMA STATE REGENTS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
Friday, May 18, 2001
Highlights This Week:
[Note: The House and Senate are both in session today, Friday, May 18. Our update will not contain all the legislative action from today’s sessions.]
Budget Agreement Reached; Tuition Bill Sent to Governor: On Monday, Governor Keating and legislative leaders announced a major agreement on education funding levels and tax cuts. For higher education, the agreement included additional funding of $34 million. SB 239, which contains the additional funding for higher education, passed the Senate by a 46-0 margin on Thursday and is expected to be voted upon by the House on Monday, May 21.
Monday’s budget agreement also allowed a final vote Tuesday on SB 596, the tuition bill. House legislative leaders had prevented a final vote on SB 596 until a funding agreement was reached. The bill passed by a vote of 69-27. The 69 votes in favor of the bill included 37 Democrats and 32 Republicans; the 27 no votes consisted of 14 Democrats and 13 Republicans. Two Democrats and 3 Republicans did not vote.
