Highlights This Week:
Tuition Bill Pulled from House
Agenda; Final Vote Still Pending:
On Monday, House Democratic leaders removed the tuition bill, SB 596,
from the House floor agenda. A final
vote on the bill had been expected Monday.
House Majority Floor Leader Danny Hilliard (D – Sulphur) indicated that
the tuition issue was a significant element in the continuing negotiations over
funding levels for state education entities and therefore final action on the
bill was delayed. On Thursday, House
Speaker Larry Adair told reporters that the tuition bill would remain off the
House floor agenda for at least a while longer.
SB 596 has already passed the
Senate and if it is approved by the House, it will go to the Governor for his
consideration.
SB 596 would authorize maximum
annual increases of 7% for resident tuition, 9% for nonresident tuition, 10%
for resident tuition at professional schools (law, medicine, dental, veterinary
medicine, optometry, etc.), and 15% for nonresident professional school
tuition. The bill is authored by Sen.
Cal Hobson (D – Lexington) and Rep. Bill Nations (D – Norman).

Budget Negotiations Continue: House and Senate legislative leaders
continued negotiations this week over final funding levels for the state’s
largest education agencies. However,
there were no announcements of agreements by the end of the week.
