Highlights This Week:
Senate Approves Tuition Bill; Final House Vote Expected Monday: On Tuesday, the Senate passed SB 596 by an overwhelming 39-6 margin. The bill would authorize maximum annual increases of 7% for resident tuition, 9% for nonresident tuition, 10% for resident tuition at professional schools (law, medicine, dental, veterinary medicine, optometry, etc.), and 15% for nonresident professional school tuition. The bill is authored by Sen. Cal Hobson (D – Lexington) and Rep. Bill Nations (D – Norman).
The bill is expected to be considered by the House of Representatives on Monday, May 7. The House floor session begins at 1:00 p.m. (The House floor agenda for Monday can be viewed at: http://www.lsb.state.ok.us/house/agenda_May7.htm .) If passed by the House, the bill will go to the Governor.
The vote in favor of SB 596 was bi-partisan. The 39 yes votes included 25 Democrats and 14 Republicans; 5 Democrats and 1 Republican voted against the bill. Three other Republican senators did not vote.
