Highlights This Week:

Senate Advances College Savings Tax Deduction:   On Tuesday, the Senate passed HB 1896 which would authorize a state income tax deduction of up to $2,500 for contributions to accounts in the Oklahoma College Savings Plan.  The bill passed unanimously, on a 45-0 vote.  The bill is expected to go to a joint conference committee that would be responsible for drafting a final version of the bill.  To become law, the bill would have to approved again by both the House and Senate.

The savings plan, which now has nearly 2,300 accounts and more than $4.5 million in assets, is scheduled to announce two new investment options later this month.  More information on the Oklahoma College Savings Plan is available at:  http://www.ok4saving.org/

Task Force to Study Career-Technology Certification:   On Monday, the Senate sent to the Governor HB 1914, which creates the Task Force on Career-Technology Professional Certification.  The bill passed the Senate by a 40-0 vote and is now pending action by the Governor.

The purpose of the task force is “to study the procedures and standards of professional certification of career-technology educators and to prepare recommendations for legislative and other action needed.”  The task force would be comprised of 18 members, including a faculty member from a teacher education program at a state system institution and the Chancellor for Higher Education.
