WHAT: Photo and news opportunity as the U.S. Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Director Lynn Mahaffie attends the fourth annual Oklahoma GEAR UP Conference. She will be joined by additional national, state and local higher education leaders to speak with public school educators and learn more about Oklahoma’s innovative strategies for student success, best practices in staff development and effective methods for school improvement.
In addition, Government Relations Associate for the National Council for Community and Education Partners Scott Frein is slated to speak.
Also, the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Business and Education Coalition Dr. Phyllis Hudecki will speak to the GEAR UP group during a luncheon address. She will discuss what Oklahoma businesses need in terms of a skilled workforce and how public education plays the most vital role in preparing that workforce.

The U.S. Department of Education awarded Oklahoma with a state GEAR UP grant totaling $20.5 million in August 1999. The grant has been matched by more than $25 million from state and partner resources. With funds totaling $45.5 million, GEAR UP receives 45 percent of total funding from the federal government and 55 percent from other organizations.
