OCALD Minutes

OCALD
Minutes of the September 28, 2000 meeting
State Regents' Conference Room, Oklahoma City, OK

Ed Johnson, Vice-Chair/Chair Elect, called the meeting to order.

Johnson introduced guest, Dr. Danny Wallace, Director of OU School of Library and Information Studies. Dr. Wallace discussed the new initiatives undertaken by the school, the biggest being the introduction of an undergraduate degree in Information Studies to begin in the fall of 2001. Dr. Wallace has assigned four task forces to study: Program, Distance Education, Recruiting to the profession, and the issue of specialization. Dr. Wallace encouraged input from state professionals regarding the focus of the task forces. Dr. Wallace invites email to dwallace@ou.edu.

Phil Moss provided an update on the Regents. The next Regents meeting will be in October in Tulsa.

Pat Weaver-Meyers reported on the Cooperative Collection Development and Resource Sharing Committee in the absence of the chair, David Robinson. The committee is looking at the possibility of consortia pricing for several databases.

Sharon Saulmon asked for volunteers to serve on the Web Site Committee. If you are interested in serving on this committee email Beth Anne Freeman.

Susan McVey, ODL, discussed the recent difficulties experienced in using FirstSearch. OCLC technical support and Amigos have given conflicting reasons for the problems. OCLC reports they are continuing to monitor the situation. Anne Prestamo announced that training accounts for FirstSearch databases are available by contacting Amigos. The advantage of the training account is that it does not interfere with the ports assigned to the state for searching. Susan encouraged all professionals to contact their legislators to express the importance of continued funding for the statewide databases. Dottie Davis, Anne Prestamo and Barbara King have been selected to serve on the OLTN Database Selection Committee.

The minutes of the August 24, 2000 meeting were approved.

Johnson announced upcoming professional meetings being held in the state.

The next OCALD meeting will be Thursday, October 26, 2000 at 1:00 p.m.

Meeting adjourned.
